Developed by physical therapist Bonnie Pruden in 1976, myotherapy involves applying focused pressure onto specific points of the body called "trigger points". Trigger points are places in the body that can cause pain to other areas of the body. For instance a trigger point on the hamstring might cause pain in the lower back. These trigger points are dissolved by applying direct pressure to the muscle for several seconds with either the hands, fingers, or elbows. Hot and Cold Therapy helps increase circulation in area being treated as well as body. When an inflamed area is treated with cold, the blood vessels are constricted and then forces the body to direct warm blood to the area to increase the flow and releasing restricted area. Areas treated with heat help to even the flow of blood by increasing the temperature of blood to that of the heat pack to stabilize the pain.
